For a person, the amount of sleep needed would depend on many factors. One is age. For adults it is recommended to sleep seven. Preschool children need 11 to 13 hours; school age children, 10 to 11 hours; and teenagers, at least nine hours. Several studies show the negative consequences of lack of sleep, including adverse effects on functioning and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. The best cure to sleep debt is more sleep. So, sleep one to two hours earlier and don’t wake up to an alarm clock the next day. However, the popular power nap which is a 30 minute to one-hour nap within the day is known to boost mental activity, shedding more positive light on the expression “sleeping on the job.”
